Food

Have you seen this movie?

I finally watched it the other night with P and here are my thoughts:
1-I no longer want to eat meat
2-I want to buy organic (mostly because I want to support farmers who are trying to keep our food natural)
3-The people who are suppose to be regulating our food and making sure its safe stink at their job, they should be fired!  The systems are so corrupt, it's sickening.
4-I want to know where my food is coming from and buy local, when possible.

Okay, so the first one I can't really see us doing.  I love hamburgers too much and we eat chicken just about every night.  I think we both would suffer if I started to cut meat completely out of our diet.  And the second one (buying organic food) we just can't afford, even though I tried to tell P that it's important to invest in our health.  P and I definitely see differently when it comes to the topic of organic.  I certainly don't believe that everything you buy must be organic, but I do believe that there are some foods (those with the most pesticides and antibiotics added to them) that should be bought organic, if the budget permits.

But, after a little discussion, P said we could compromise so I'm going to try and use meat sparingly in our meals; I'll have to get more creative in my cooking.  And I'm going to start buying a few things organic (i.e. milk, eggs, some fruits and veggies).
I did some research to see what foods are best bought organic and which foods you don't need to worry about.  Here's my findings-

Foods that are okay to NOT buy organic
-Asparagus
-Avocados
-Bananas
-Broccoli
-Cabbage
-Kiwi
-Mango
-Onions
-Papaya
-Pineapple

Foods that you should buy organic
-Meat
-Dairy Products
-Eggs
-Peaches, Strawberries, Apples
-Bell Peppers, Lettuce/Spinach, Celery
-Potatoes

Have you seen this film? Do any of you buy organic, or do you think it's a waste of money?

I read the book for a class and watched the movie and had to stop because I was so disgusted. We already eat meat sparingly due to food budget but I buy organic milk for Bryson because regular was making him have the runs. I try to buy local and since moving to VA they have a huge farmers market that runs most of the year and they have local produce in the stores. I buy a lot of bryson snacks organic and make sure it has simple ingredients. No high frutose corn syrup (expect for some things because it's just so tasty). But I think if you limit meat (we eat more fish that I'd say most americans) and buy organic it would balance out. If you like beans that it's easy to limit meat. Dustin doesn't so it's pretty hard to have a variety.

sorry that was a random mess.

I've watched that movie as well and it really made me sick! But I'm like you, I still want to eat meat but from places that raise their animals humanely...but that's pretty expensive... I'm currently reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. You should read it, it's really good! (It talks a lot about processed foods, the food industry)
I try to buy our lettuce and eggs organic. Right now we're working on cutting out processed foods and still eating meat but not having it be the main course.

I've watched the film twice now and I said the EXACT same things you did: I never want to eat meat! EVER! It really is so disgusting how our food is made and where it comes from. Drew and I both talked about it together and we haven't cut meat out of our diet entirely, but we don't buy red meat anymore (We'll still eat hamburgers occasionally), so really we're just eating chicken and fish that is wild-caught.

As far as organic goes, it's really hard because it is so much more expensive, but I want to support them. So I've started buying organic milk, eggs, chicken, spinach and yogurt. That's about all our budget can afford and I feel that those will have the greatest amount of antibiotics/pesticides.

Another book you should read that has really opened my eyes is "Master Your Metabolism" by Jillian Michaels. She talks about how all those pesticides and antibiotics we're ingesting our endocrine disruptors and that they're killing our metabolism. It's not a diet book per se, but a book on how to live a long, healthy life. I highly recommend it.

Lastly, D&C 49:28 says "And whoso forbiddeth to abstain from meats that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God." Drew showed me this scripture, I know that meat is good and it is from God, but the way our food is being processed now is NOT the way God intended us to eat it. I feel very strongly about that. Those pesticides stay can stay in your body for up to 10 years! When I start having children I don't want my unborn child to be unwittingly exposed to so many toxins and chemicals that could have been prevented.

Anyway, this is way longer than what I intended. I'm just learning all this too, so I'm glad to have someone else to go back and forth with. :)

www.localharvest.org is a great website that will tell you where all the farmer's markets are in your area.

So I had to add. I'm watching some documentary about a guy reducing his footprint and a huge thing they mention was that it doesn't have to be organic. but local. it could be local but not certified organic because they use antibiotics for a sick cow. I definitely feel it's important to buy local more than if it's organic. because local is often organic just it can't have the organic label. anyways, I thought of you as I watched it.

Poor P. less meat in your diet... meat is one of the things that makes us men. You think that the meat at Portillo's is organic? I bet so. mmm...

I agree with you jess, thats one reason I cut meat out of my diet over 2 years ago. I eat it every now and again but its crazy because when i do eat it i get sick, my body has a hard time digesting it. That movie is very similar to a book called "skinny bitch" which talks a lot about the energy behind the food we eat and how that manifests in our bodies. Anyways it is very expensive to eat organic, so it takes a lot more work to eat that way but definetly worth it.
